Banding Together for Hope in Sierra Leone I
March 30, 2008
The Chicken Bone
Framingham, Massachusetts

The first musical event for the benefit of A Brighter Tomorrow for Africa took place last March at The Chicken Bone.  The tickets sold out in 24 hours and people were lined up at the door the day of the show hoping to get in.  The night consisted of music by the best of local Boston bands and included Rockin' George Leh, Diane Blue, The Porch Rockers, Ernie and the Automatics featuring Sib Hashian and Barry Goudreau, original members of the band Boston, Walk That Walk, The Flutie Brothers Band, Roadside Prophet, Full House featuring Danny Klein of the J. Geils Band, and Voodoo Sol.

The guests were treated to three hours of tremendous music along with a moving presentation in the middle by Sarah on what the Foundation is doing to improve the lives of the women and children of Sierra Leone.  We raised a lot of money, everyone had a blast and left asking when the next event was going to be.  (Answer: April 2009 at the Center for the Arts in Natick. Humanitarian Leadership Award
April, 2008
Washington, DC

In the Spring of 2008, Sarah Armstrong received this prestigious award from NOSLINA (National Organization of Sierra Leoneans in North America).  The following is an excerpt from the award notification:

Each year NOSLINA solicits nominations from across North America of individuals who have excelled in enhancing the wellbeing of Sierra Leoneans. The Humanitarian Leadership Award is our organization’s highest award for these efforts. To be nominated for it is recognition by various individuals and groups that you have made a profound contribution that has enhanced the name of Sierra Leone and the welfare of its peoples. This award is an affirmation of your signal, unique, and exemplary contributions. It bestows on you the distinction and esteem held by those whose lives you have touched. For this we are pleased to honor you.

Global Youth Conference
June 2008
Washington, DC

Sarah was invited to host two workshops for high school and university students from all over the world who gathered in DC this past spring to learn about non-profit efforts – particularly those focused on third world countries.  Many were interested in learning how small non-profits are started and how they can succeed in funding and implementing programs such as those conducted by BTA.  Over 50 students attended each of the workshops and were inspired to consider finding ways not only to help BTA but also to possibly find ways to start their own independent efforts someday.  Many have stayed in touch with her since seeing her presentation last June.

Fund Raiser at Maggiano's Restaurant
September 22, 2008
Tysons Corner, Virginia

Each year for the past three years, Maggiano's Restaurant in Tysons Corner, Virginia has hosted an event for A Brighter Tomorrow for Africa. Last September, about 50 guests came to enjoy Maggiano’s complimentary food and beverages and listen to Director Sarah Armstrong present the origins of the Foundation and its many accomplishments to date.  The presentation was filled with photographs that Sarah has taken on her trips to Sierra Leone. Trip #6 is scheduled for December 2008 and that will be featured at another Maggiano event next fall.

Speaking Engagements

Sarah is absolutely delighted to speak to any person or group who would be interested in the work of the Foundation.  To date she has met with the current and past Sierra Leone ambassadors to the United States, spoken at a number of Rotary International meetings and presented to the Chamber of Commerce, the Unitarian Church of Arlington, Virginia, the Global Youth Conference, to brownies and girl scouts and to middle and high school students.
