The Foundation's Board

Sarah Armstrong (Director), established A Brighter Tomorrow for Africa because of her interest in building on her international experience and dedicating herself to working in the area of humanitarian relief and other issues pertaining to Africa. She has been to the continent several times including trips to Sierra Leone as well as Kenya and Tanzania. Before the founding of A Brighter Africa for Tomorrow , Ms. Armstrong established her own marketing communications consulting firm, Mosaic Companywhere she continues to work with non-profit environmental and humanitarian organizations. Prior to becoming a consultant, she was Director of Organizational Relations at AARP where she worked with the CEO to develop a comprehensive plan that articulated the mission and built consensus for the function of partnerships. She  established partnerships with a number of US and international organizations. Additionally, Ms. Armstrong spent a number of years at Porter Novelli, the fourth largest international public relations firm, where she was Senior Vice President. Ms. Armstrong worked at the American Red Cross National Headquarters for ten years– always in a marketing communications capacity and providing support to both national and international disasters as well as other Red Cross issues. Before the Red Cross, she worked for advertising agencies both in New York and Washington, DC. She attended Dickinson College and also studied at the Universite de Montpellier III in Montpellier, France. She spent six years in France, speaks French and has studied Swahili. She is now learning Krio, the language of Sierra Leone.

 

Selina Tabitha Beola Ade-Williams is currently Executive Director of the Planned Parenthood Association of Sierra Leone and, in this capacity, she oversees all of the programs of the Association. Before becoming Executive Director, she was the Development Program Coordinator, Gender Coordinator and Gender Trainer for Oxfam GB Sierra Leone. In this position she was responsible for developing partnerships with NGOs, for managing the proposal pipeline and ensuring that all funded programs were processed according to established procedures. Ms Ade-Williams also served as a Consultant to the Gambia Family Planning Association. She had the primary responsibility for assisting the Executive Director in the review of the Population, Reproductive Health and Family Planning analyis done in the country and determining the impact of the conclusions of this study on the design and implementation of the Association’s Programme services.

She has a number of major accomplishments including Secretary General of Sierra Leon’s Women’s Welfare – an Inter-Africa Committee - and serving on the board of the Network on Collaborative Peace-building in Sierra Leone as well as on the board of the West African Network on Peace Building.

Ms. Ade-Williams received her International Diploma in Applied Ministry and Mission in the United Kingdom and her Masters in Family Program Administration from the Institute of Population Studies at Exeter University, also in the UK. She lives in Freetown, Sierra Leone

 

Susan Maguire’s career spans 20 years in social marketing and communications. She is currently with the Academy for Educational   Development (AED) where she is the Director of Social Marketing in the Center for Social Marketing and Behavior Change. In this role, she implements social marketing programs, qualitative research, and provides training for organizations in the U.S. and abroad. Throughout her career she has worked extensively in health and social issue topic areas including sexual health and international child survival. At AED, Susan is leading a social marketing initiative for Planned Parenthood , which focuses on improving sexual health outcomes in the U.S. She also serves as senior communications advisor for the U.S. Agency for International Development program “Strengthening the Social Acceptance of Family Planning in the Philippines” and leads a program for the American Psychiatric Foundation to improve teen mental health. Recently, Susan also directed the development of communication strategies for the U.S. Coalition for Child Survival

Prior to joining AED in 2000, Susan was VP for an international public relations firm, Porter Novelli where she managed teams working on the Legacy Foundation tobacco prevention campaign, the White House Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, the award-winning Florida “Truth” anti-tobacco campaign, and multiple mental health awareness campaigns for the National Institute of Mental Health . She began her career at NBC News in New York and Washington as associate producer and production manager for documentaries, affiliate news services, the “Today Show” and “Meet the Press”. 


Susan has a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work (MSW) from Catholic University,and hands-on experience as a mental health clinician and caseworker (in a communitymental health agency, foster care agency, and hospital emergency room.) She also holds a Masters degree in Public Communication from American University, and a Bachelors degree in Communications/Advertising from the University of Colorado.

Ms. Binta Mansaray is a Peace and Human Rights activist, currently head of the Outreach Programme of the Special Court for Sierra Leone. In this capacity, she is responsible for fostering a two-way communication between the Court and Sierra Leonean citizens. She directs and coordinates Special Court’s public relations and public education campaign in Sierra Leone. Her work has been internationally recognized as enhancing the role of the Special Court in promoting greater understanding of the rule of law in Sierra Leone
 

Mansaray served as Protection Partner and Country Representative for the Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children in Sierra Leone (2001-2003). In this role, she investigated abuses against the rights of refugee and internally displaced persons and other war-affected women and girls. She undertook advocacy at local and international levels based on her findings. In particular, she monitored the sexual abuse and exploitation scandal in West Africa, providing input and Women's Commission recommendations to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, on concrete actions UNHCR should take to redress these violations.

 

Mansaray served as Partner and Consultant to WITNESS and was the Associate Producer of the documentary “Operation Fine Girl - Rape Used as a Weapon of War.” She was also Researcher and Consultant to the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone – UNAMSIL – where she  documented, processed and analyzed data on testimonies of over 700 survivors of war-related rape and sexual violence.  These reports were referenced in both the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report, and in the joint report of Physicians for Human Rights and UNAMSIL – War-related sexual violence in Sierra Leone.

 

She was born in Sierra Leone and has her M.A from Fordham University and her B.A Honours from the University of Sierra Leone.

 


Ann Stingle devoted her career to humanitarian issues resultingfrom international armed conflict and natural disasters. She served asthe Executive Director of the Crimes of War Educations Project atAmerican University in Washington D.C. Prior to that she was the Manager of Media Relations and International Spokesperson for the American Red Cross. Her international assignments have taken her to Kuwait, El Salvador, South Africa, Mali, Somalia, Burundi, the Democratic Republicof the Congo, Honduras and Albania, as well as staff-on-loan with the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva, Switzerland. She first became involved with the Red Cross in Vietnam. 

 

Currently retired, Mrs. Stingle is a playwright and freelance writer. She continues to be deeply concerned about humanitarian needs in Africa, particularly those impacting women and children. 

 

Mrs. Stingle earned a Master of Arts degree in International Communication from the American University in Washington D.C. and a Bachelor of Science degree fromSouthwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, where she received the Citation of Merit as outstanding alumna. She lives with her husband in Fairfax, Virginia.

 

 

Program Assistant for BTA

 

Abu Bakarr Kamara was born in the city of Lungi on the West Coast of Sierra Leone. He received his secondary education at Saint Augustini Agricultural School in Lungi. He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Sierra Leone with majors in Education and Mathematics and a minor in Physics. Upon graduation, he attended the Humanity First Computer Training Centre in Freetown where he successfully completed courses in several application packages and in computer maintenance and networking.

Abu has several years' experience in education and was a teacher in a secondary school in Lungi. As Program Assistant for BTA, Abu carries out a variety of operational tasks in Sierra Leone on our behalf while working closely with the organizations our foundation is supporting.
