The Organizations We Support

Children of the Nations

The war left thousands of children orphaned and abandoned.  In the rural areas, malnutrition, starvation and disease are commonplace. Typically, none of the children have ever been immunized against polio, typhoid, tetanus, yellow fever, diarrhea and other preventable diseases.  Children of the Nations has implemented a program to inoculate thousands of women and children in the worst of the rural areas.  It has also established a program to provide nutritious meals to school children and preschoolers.

Children's Learning Services

One of the serious consequences of the war was that children either actually fought in the civil war or were enormously affected by the violence that was all around them.  For many of them, therefore, violence is how you resolve conflict. To counter this, Children’s Learning Services has launched the School Conflict Management Program to teach nonviolent behavior in 86 secondary schools across the country.

 National Accountability Group

Corruption in government is a fact of life throughout most of the countries in Africa and Sierra Leone is, unfortunately, no exception. The National Accountability Group feels that there must be “a concerted effort by civil society and government to address corruption” and that’s exactly the reason the group was formed. They believe the way to accomplish this is to empower the people by providing information and public education. They have specific programs for educating the children, giving them, at an early age, the ability to recognize and respond to corruption.

The Market Women’s Association

Illiteracy among women in Sierra Leone is a staggering 85%. There is a total lack of involvement of women in the decision-making processes in the country.  The Association works with women to raise their reading and comprehension skills.  They provide workshops, leadership training and civic education to help empower women in a male-dominated society.  They also provide support to widows who receive nothing when their husbands die.

FreeTong Players International

The Freetong Players of Sierra Leone are a group of performing artists.  They seek to educate children about their culture and national history through song, dance and plays.  The objective is give the kids a sense of identity and to build their self-esteem after years of living in a destructive environment. The dream of The Players is to have a school where children can come for three months at a time to live, work and learn.  Some time ago, the organization was given land for this purpose but it has never had the funds to build the school itself.
